Emergency Procedures for Drivers in Spain 2026

💡Quick Answer

In Spain, call 112 for all emergencies. At an accident scene: activate your V-16 emergency beacon (mandatory from 2026 for Spanish-registered vehicles, replaces warning triangles), wear reflective vest before exiting, and assist injured if safe.

V-16 Emergency Beacon

From January 2026, Spanish-registered vehicles must carry a V-16 emergency beacon instead of warning triangles. The V-16 is placed on the roof of your vehicle — you don't need to exit onto a dangerous road to set up triangles.

At an Accident

  1. Stop safely, turn on hazard lights
  2. Activate V-16 beacon on the roof (visible up to 1km)
  3. Put on reflective vest (before exiting if needed)
  4. Call 112
  5. Help injured if safe to do so
  6. Exchange details with other parties

Required Equipment

  • V-16 emergency beacon (mandatory from 2026)
  • Reflective vest
  • Warning triangles (still recommended as backup; mandatory for foreign-registered vehicles)
  • Spare tire and tools

Tips

  • The V-16 beacon has a battery life of ~30 minutes and flashes amber
  • Foreign-registered vehicles still need warning triangles
  • Always put on your reflective vest before exiting the vehicle
